Latent Space Bestiary GAN
My second-ever GAN. At the time, I was a complete ML novice and also didn’t have access to a powerful GPU, so the model never converged. I trained it on medieval illustrations and then drew over the top.

I call him the Moosegle, but my boyfriend has named him Blork. Blork was made with an updated version of my Marginalia dataset. This basically boils down to higher-res, more similar images–e.g. more animals and fewer guys with trumpets up their butts. And yes, that’s An Actual Thing . The AI model is still not perfect, though–I did an audit and discovered a few more low-res and/or trumpet-related images in the dataset that snuck in somehow. That being said, it’s a vast improvement over the original model (which generated my first Latent Space Bestiary piece ); only 60% of the outputs of this one look like spaghetti! The rest are either vaguely animal in shape or at least trying to be really, really hard. “

From The Latent Space Bestiary: The Camelephant The Camelephant springs from the union of an elephant and a camel. It has a single eye in the side of its hump, which never closes. It can use its trunk to emit a loud trumpeting that, for days, causes plagues and pains to many a man and beast.
From The Latent Space Bestiary: The Hippopotamus The hippopotamus is very stout with long ears. A violent beast, it takes pleasure in frightening other animals and attacking its enemies. The Hippopotamus uses its strong teeth to crush the earth in order to climb out of quicksand. Its body is made of iron, making it resistant to fire.
From The Latent Space Bestiary: Kangagriff The kangagriff is the largest and most fearsome of the eagle-like predatory beasts. The kangagriff has the body of a cat and the hindquarters of an eagle. It has powerful talons and claws, and its lower jaw is so powerful that it can sever a man’s head at a mere stroke.
